A little slice of heaven (or Philadelphia) has landed in the Bay Area in the form of Amato’s. Not located around the corner from campus like I.B’s, but worth the road trip down there, located just 1/2 mile west off Hwy 280 in San Jose, this family owned and operated shop has the 4 most important things to look for in a sandwich: flavor, healthful ingredients, size and price. Offering steak, chicken, sausage, meatballs & variety of other selections, these sandwiches are so mouth-watering and flavorful that they were voted Best Sandwiches in the Bay Area by the Guide to the Good Life ‘00-’11. In spite of how delicious the food is, Amato’s is still very health-conscious. They use no oil or flavor enhancers- each sandwich cooks in own juices. They have the leanest beef around, but if you’re concerned about the fat from the cheese, just order one without it- they’re just as good. Sandwiches come in three sizes: the 7” Shorty, the 12” Half and the 24” Whole and don’t be surprised if you can’t even finish the Shorty by yourself, these aren’t put onto tiny little baguettes, they go on hearty fresh Italian Bread. You won’t leave there starving and you’ll definitely be looking forward to coming back again.
